One small but important feature that illlustrates this point is "branding". To the contrary, Gold was around long before Producer was, and Producer really seems to have come about by the concept of adding features which would be most useful to pros.
It's got great features, and certainly isn't just a dumbed down version of Producer. Gold is going to be just fine for most individuals. Producer, however, genuinely does live up to the "pro" mantra. Many products are offered in both standard and "pro" versions, but in reality it is the pro version which has all the features that we want while the standard is just dumbed down. With version 3 there is a much bigger difference between Gold and Producer. Also note version 3 of Gold and Producer is in beta. I am sure you have seen this site, but if you havent here is a link comparing the different versions. It is expensive if your not using it professionally. Most of those that are using it professionally think its worth the price.
